Concerns about the rapid slowdown in the labor market receded as last week’s new jobless claims remained at the expected level. Furthermore, dollar buying strengthened due to the August service industry PMI flash estimate and higher-than-expected existing home sales in July, accompanying the rise in long-term interest rates. The euro-dollar rate fell from 1.1143 to 1.1098 and closed at 1.1112. The flash estimate for August consumer confidence in the euro area unexpectedly worsened, leading to increased selling of the euro in anticipation of an additional interest rate cut by the European Central Bank (ECB) at the September meeting of the council.
