Don't Ignore The Insider Selling In Unum Group

Simply Wall St ·  Aug 19 18:44

We wouldn't blame Unum Group (NYSE:UNM) shareholders if they were a little worried about the fact that Timothy Arnold, the Executive VP of Voluntary Benefits & President of Colonial Life recently netted about US$541k selling shares at an average price of US$54.11. That's a big disposal, and it decreased their holding size by 20%, which is notable but not too bad.

Unum Group Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

The President, Richard McKenney, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$2.5m worth of shares at a price of US$49.15 each. So it's clear an insider wanted to take some cash off the table, even below the current price of US$55.03. When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. While insider selling is not a positive sign, we can't be sure if it does mean insiders think the shares are fully valued, so it's only a weak sign. We note that the biggest single sale was only 5.6% of Richard McKenney's holding.

Insider Ownership

Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. It appears that Unum Group insiders own 0.8% of the company, worth about US$83m. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.
