Fisco Japan ·  Aug 19 15:21

At the closing of the stock market on the 19th, the number of rising stocks among the Nikkei average constituent stocks was 33, the number of falling stocks was 191, and the number of unchanged stocks was 1.

The U.S. stock market continued to rise on the 16th. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 40,659.76, up 96.70 points (+0.24%), the Nasdaq closed at 17,631.72, up 37.22 points (+0.21%), and the S&P 500 closed at 5,554.25, up 11.03 points (+0.20%). Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago President Charles Evans expressed concern about the economy and labor market, and housing starts were lower than expected, triggering caution and selling at the opening. However, after the release of the Michigan Consumer Confidence Index, which was better than expected, concerns about the economy eased, buying increased, and the market turned upward. Toward the end, the market continued to rise, reflecting solid U.S. stocks and awareness of the yen's depreciation and easing of expectations for a rate cut, but the Tokyo market started with a selling bias. After the selling receded, the Nikkei average gradually reduced its decline and even rebounded temporarily, but the market sentiment changed dramatically in the afternoon. The Nikkei average extended its decline under futures-led selling amid a rapid acceleration of the yen's appreciation and dollar depreciation to around 145 yen per dollar. It ended the day in the low price range, hitting today's lowest level just before the market closed.

At the end of the day, the Nikkei average was 37,388.62 yen, down 674.05 yen or 1.77% from the previous business day. The trading volume on the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE) prime market was 1.7172 billion shares, with the trading value at 4.1613 trillion yen. Among industry sectors, mining, machinery, transportation equipment, electric appliances, rubber products, etc. declined, while only small retail trade and maritime transportation sectors rose. On the TSE prime market, the number of advancing issues was 15%, while that of declining issues was 83%.
