At the end of June this year, the current President of the United States, and then presidential candidate, Biden, revealed what was widely called a "disaster" during his debate with Trump. Faced with pressure from all sides, Biden announced his withdrawal after three weeks of struggling, and pushed Harris on stage as his running mate.
It is precisely because of this story that the Trump camp has been asking for more debates with Harris. For example, the former president himself requested three direct confrontations with Harris, while Walz, in addition to accepting the October 1st debate, further invited Walz to another debate on September 18.
According to past American practices, vice presidential candidate debates are generally held only once. Faced with the obvious rejection, Walz further ridiculed, "Tim Walz refuses to deploy!" This sentence also has another ironic meaning - accusing Walz of evading the Iraq war in 2005.
Walz served in the US Army National Guard for more than 20 years and was awarded the rank of Sergeant, one of the highest ranks that a soldier can achieve. Before his unit was deployed to Iraq in 2005, Walz took off his uniform and began competing as a congressman. This incident was also highlighted by the Trump camp.
Subsequently, the media also invited Walz's old comrades-in-arms to try to clarify that Walz did not receive a clear order to be deployed to Iraq before leaving the unit, and could only speculate.
Wan's new role
Due to Biden's poor performance during the debate, Trump was in a greatly advantageous position when he chose Wan as his running mate. But with the Democrats quickly settling personnel changes, Harris quickly stood her ground and is ahead of Trump by 1-5 percentage points in most polls.
Faced with the possibility of becoming a common target for criticism in the future, Wan, after experiencing initial confusion and repeated misspeak, found a new role - following Harris and Walz's campaign, looking for opportunities to speak out.
A very interesting scene happened on Wednesday of this week. Wan deliberately chose to give a speech where Harris's plane "Air Force Two" landed, and then went to the waiting press corps to joke, "I came to check my future plane."
