ATN International, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:ATNI) Share Price Boosted 27% But Its Business Prospects Need A Lift Too

Simply Wall St ·  Aug 9 18:45

ATN International, Inc. (NASDAQ:ATNI) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 27% gain and recovering from prior weakness. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 31% over that time.

In spite of the firm bounce in price, ATN International may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.5x, since almost half of all companies in the Telecom industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 1.1x and even P/S higher than 4x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

How Has ATN International Performed Recently?

With its revenue growth in positive territory compared to the declining revenue of most other companies, ATN International has been doing quite well of late. It might be that many expect the strong revenue performance to degrade substantially, possibly more than the industry, which has repressed the P/S. Those who are bullish on ATN International will be hoping that this isn't the case and the company continues to beat out the industry.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the industry for P/S ratios like ATN International's to be considered reasonable.

Taking a look back first, we see that there was hardly any revenue growth to speak of for the company over the past year. Still, the latest three year period has seen an excellent 57% overall rise in revenue, in spite of its uninspiring short-term performance. So while the company has done a solid job in the past, it's somewhat concerning to see revenue growth decline as much as it has.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the three analysts covering the company suggest revenue growth is heading into negative territory, declining 1.2% over the next year. That's not great when the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 147%.

In light of this, it's understandable that ATN International's P/S would sit below the majority of other companies. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/S has reached a floor yet with revenue going in reverse. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.

The Final Word

The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift ATN International's P/S close to the industry median. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.

With revenue forecasts that are inferior to the rest of the industry, it's no surprise that ATN International's P/S is on the lower end of the spectrum. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. Unless there's material change, it's hard to envision a situation where the stock price will rise drastically.
