Amazon's AWS cloud business was not favored from the beginning. In 2013, the business had revenue of 3.1 billion US dollars. However, time has changed, and the cloud computing wave has hit the ground.
As a leader in cloud computing, Amazon's AWS business contributed 25.7 billion US dollars in revenue for the full year of 2018. The revenue for the first three quarters of this year was close to 25.1 billion US dollars, which is no problem over last year. Revenue increased sevenfold in 6 years, with a compound growth rate of over 42%. This is probably the most remarkable scene in cloud computing history.
AWS is currently a treasure for Amazon. In Q3 this year, AWS accounted for 13.2% of Amazon's overall revenue, but contributed more than 68.8% of operating profit, making it Amazon's well-deserved “cash cow.” Despite losing 10 billion orders from the Pentagon, AWS's first-mover advantage is still significant.
