Fox previously agreed to hold a debate between Trump and Harris on September 4th. Trump emphasized on Thursday that "I think it's very important to hold a debate." He also added that CBS News will hold a vice presidential debate for his running mate, Ohio federal senator JD Vance, and Harris' deputy, Minnesota Governor Waltz.
Recently, Harris has been leading in various polls from behind and gradually beginning to take the lead. According to a Reuters/ Ipsos poll released on Thursday, Harris' lead over Trump is widening, with her leading Trump 42% to 37%. Compared to the same poll from July 22nd to 23rd, she was only leading Trump by three percentage points at 37%.
More and more voters have also begun to question Trump's age. According to the latest Morning consult poll, before Biden announced his withdrawal from the race, 58% of respondents believed that Trump was in good physical condition; but today, that number has dropped to 52%. More than half of the voters also stated that Trump is now too old to participate in the campaign, up from 44% before.
However, in the national average poll tracked by The Hill/Decision Desk HQ, Harris and Trump are almost neck-and-neck, with Trump receiving 47.4% and Harris receiving a high 47.2%.
