As of press time, the Dow rose 120.71 points, or 0.43%, to 28252.76; the Nasdaq rose 42.83 points, or 0.49%, to 8760.15; and the S & P 500 rose 11.46 points, or 0.36%, to 3180.03.
Seven of the 11 sectors in the S & P 500 rose and four fell, with energy leading the rise and real estate leading the decline.
Economic data
Us retail sales grew less than expected in November as Americans cut discretionary spending, which could prompt economists to downgrade their growth forecasts for the fourth quarter.
Us retail sales rose 0.2 per cent in November from a month earlier, the Commerce Department reported on Friday. Meanwhile, the October figure was revised upwards to 0.4 per cent month-on-month growth, compared with a previously released preliminary figure of 0.3 per cent.
