US Democratic presidential candidate Harris chose Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate on Tuesday, betting he can attract working-class swing-state voters and help the Democratic Party win the presidential election in November.

According to a source, Walz stood out and beat out other popular competitors like Arizona Senator Mark Kelly, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

The 60-year-old Walz appeared with Harris at a campaign rally in Philadelphia tonight and will head to Las Vegas, Phoenix, Detroit, Savannah, Raleigh, and western Wisconsin.

Earlier, US President Biden announced his withdrawal from the 2024 presidential election and appointed Vice President Harris to succeed him.

After being elected governor for the first time in 2018, Walz is now in his second term of office. He has the potential to attract moderate working-class and rural voters, who could help Harris win in swing states.

Walz was born in a rural area of Nebraska and taught sociology in high school. He entered politics after marrying a fellow teacher and has also served in the National Guard.

In recent weeks, Walz has become a more prominent political figure, especially in his attacks on JD Vance, Trump's vice presidential candidate.

Recently, a 2021 video went viral online, with Vance warning that America is being ruled by a group of childless cat ladies and using Harris as an example. Walz described Vance as a "weirdo" and became a spokesman for the Democrats. His comments were widely circulated on social media after being clipped.

Before becoming governor of Minnesota, Walz served in the US House of Representatives, representing a predominantly rural district. His relationship with Midwest rural voters could help Harris win votes. These voters have generally voted for Trump in recent years, and the Harris team hopes Walz can attract those who are not yet determined to re-elect Trump.

Walz can also help Harris avoid being accused by the Republicans of being a coastal elite member. Harris grew up in a scholarly family in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Since Biden dropped out of the race, enthusiasm for the Democratic candidate has once again surged. According to analysis by the Financial Times, Harris has narrowed the gap with Trump in national and swing-state polls. She is also far ahead in fundraising competition.

Before the Democratic National Convention to be held in Chicago on August 19, Harris will officially be nominated on August 2. In the days after Biden withdrew, the Democratic Party quickly rallied around Harris, avoiding the chaotic process of replacing Biden.
