2019 Hurun Brand List Released: Maotai, China, Tmall Ranks in the Top Three

Hurun Research Institute today released the "2019 Hurun Brand list", which is the 14th year in a row that Hurun Research Institute has released Hurun Brand list. Guizhou Moutai won the championship with 640 billion brand value, China ranked second and third with 350 billion brand value and Tmall ranked second and third with 320 billion brand value. Taobao, China Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, Wechat, Ping an, Tencent, China China Construction Bank Corporation and China Mobile Limited made the top ten.

The following are the highlights of the list:

Of the top 200 brands, 11 are new to the list, including QQ, peach and plum bread, Luzhou laojiao, panda, Tianwei Food, Excellence, Guoxin Securities, Yuanfudao, Xuhui, Missfresh Limited and New Dairy. China's brand value has nearly tripled over the past year, making it the biggest brand on the list, followed by Douyin and Furong King, both of which have more than tripled. Among the ten brands with the biggest increase, there are 5 tobacco brands, namely, China, Furong King, Yuxi, Shuangxi and Liqun.

Among the top 10 industries with the largest number of brands on the list, the tobacco industry had the largest average increase in brand value, up 178%, followed by alcohol, up 124%, life services industry rose 65%, food and beverage industry rose 51%, e-commerce and retail industry rose 36%, film and television media industry rose 30%, real estate industry rose 17%, financial industry rose 14%, digital industry rose 9%. The health care industry fell slightly by 1%.

BABA has seven brands on the list, becoming the parent company with the largest number of brands on the list.The top three are Tmall, Taobao and rookie.Tencent has three brands on the list, namely Wechat, Tencent and QQ.Yanghe has three brands on the list, namely, Dream Blue, Sky Blue and Sea Blue.

More than half of the top 200 (110) are private brands, the same as last year. 53 private brands entered the top 100, the same as last year, while 5 private brands entered the top 10, 1 less than last year. Eight of the 11 new brands on the list are private brands.

Of the top 200 corporate headquarters, the top three are consistent with the past decade, with 58 headquartered in Beijing, 2 fewer than last year, 44 headquartered in Guangdong, the same as last year, ranking second, 34 headquartered in Shanghai, the same as last year, ranking third, 17 headquartered in Zhejiang, ranking fourth as last year, and Jiangsu ranked fifth with nine brands on the list, the same as last year. In terms of cities, the top five are Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen (23), Hangzhou (15) and Guangzhou (11). The top five cities account for nearly 70% of the list.

Compared with last year, the top three most valuable brands in Guangdong, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Fujian, Shandong, Yunnan and Hong Kong remained unchanged. China Mobile Limited replaced Baidu, Inc. into the top three most valuable brands in Beijing. Pinduoduo replaced Pacific Insurance into the top three most valuable brands in Shanghai. Luzhou laojiao returned to the top three most valuable brands in Sichuan. Peach and plum bread entered the top three of the most valuable brands in Liaoning for the first time.

The corporate headquarters of "most valuable Chinese private brands", Beijing topped the list, with 35 private brands on the list, 1 less than last year; Guangdong second, 25 private brands on the list, the same as last year; Shanghai third, there are 21 private brands on the list, an increase of 1 over last year; and Zhejiang fourth, there are 13 private brands on the list, the same as last year.

Compared with last year, Tmall replaced Taobao to become the first most valuable private brand.Tianwei Food and New Dairy entered the top three most valuable private brands in Sichuan for the first time.

Finance and real estate are still the two major industries with the largest number of brands on the list. The financial industry has 40 brands on the list this year, an increase of one over last year; the real estate industry has 24 brands on the list this year, an increase of one over last year. The number of brands on the list in these two major industries accounts for 30% of the list; the life services industry ranks third, with 16 brands on the list, 3 fewer than last year.

The combined value of the top 200 Chinese brands rose 40% from last year to 7.8 trillion, an all-time high.

Among the 11 new brands on the list, QQ entered the top 20 with a brand value of 120 billion yuan. Vanke ranked as the most valuable real estate brand, with a 17 per cent increase in brand value to 57.5 billion yuan, Evergrande in second place, down 5 per cent to 45.5 billion yuan from last year, and Country Garden Holdings in the top three, up 41 per cent to 43 billion yuan from last year. Of the 24 real estate brands on the list, 16 are private brands. The total brand value of the listed real estate brands accounts for 5% of the whole list. Guangdong-based real estate brands have the largest number of brands on the list, with 10.

Life service industry

Wechat won the title of life service industry in a row, with its brand value rising 35% to 230 billion yuan from last year, while QQ, in second place, reached 120 billion yuan in brand value. The life service industry has a total of 16 brands on the list this year and 15 private brands, accounting for 8% of the total brand value. Beijing is the region with the largest number of brands on the list in the industry, with nine brands from Beijing.

Alcohol industry

The top two in the wine industry are still Guizhou Moutai and Wuliangye, and the national cellar 1573 enters the top three for the first time. Huawei remained the champion of the digital industry, with its brand value up 14% from last year to 125 billion yuan, while XIAOMI remained second, down 13% from last year to 42.5 billion yuan. The digital industry has nine brands on the list, seven of which are private brands. The total brand value of digital brands on the list accounts for 4% of the list. Guangdong is the region with the largest number of brand headquarters in the industry, with six brands on the list, including four in Shenzhen.
