The Zurich Gold Master Bank was formed through informal negotiations between these three banks. It is independent of government supervision, and functions in the market using a combination of traders and clearing systems. Thanks to Switzerland's unique banking system and ancillary gold trading services, Zurich provides a free and confidential environment for gold trading. Furthermore, the preferential agreement between Switzerland and South Africa enabled Switzerland to obtain a large amount of South African gold, and Soviet gold was also distributed here. Together, these factors have made Zurich the world's largest transit point for new gold and the world's largest private gold storage center.

The Zurich Gold Market does not have an official gold price setting mechanism. Prices are determined by negotiation based on supply and demand conditions on each trading day, and there is no limit to daily price fluctuations. Gold bars have the same specifications as in London, and delivery is carried out in Zurich or designated vaults.
