Ultra Clean Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:UCTT) Looks Inexpensive After Falling 30% But Perhaps Not Attractive Enough

Simply Wall St ·  Aug 3 20:10

Ultra Clean Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:UCTT) shareholders won't be pleased to see that the share price has had a very rough month, dropping 30% and undoing the prior period's positive performance. Longer-term shareholders will rue the drop in the share price, since it's now virtually flat for the year after a promising few quarters.

Since its price has dipped substantially, Ultra Clean Holdings may be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.9x, since almost half of all companies in the Semiconductor industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 3.8x and even P/S higher than 10x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

What Does Ultra Clean Holdings' Recent Performance Look Like?

Ultra Clean Holdings hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. Perhaps the P/S remains low as investors think the prospects of strong revenue growth aren't on the horizon. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Ultra Clean Holdings would need to produce anemic growth that's substantially trailing the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 9.1% decrease to the company's top line. This has soured the latest three-year period, which nevertheless managed to deliver a decent 12% overall rise in revenue. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the revenue growth recently has been mostly respectable for the company.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 18% as estimated by the three analysts watching the company. With the industry predicted to deliver 42% growth, the company is positioned for a weaker revenue result.

In light of this, it's understandable that Ultra Clean Holdings' P/S sits below the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting to see limited future growth and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.

What We Can Learn From Ultra Clean Holdings' P/S?

Ultra Clean Holdings' P/S looks about as weak as its stock price lately. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

As expected, our analysis of Ultra Clean Holdings' analyst forecasts confirms that the company's underwhelming revenue outlook is a major contributor to its low P/S. Shareholders' pessimism on the revenue prospects for the company seems to be the main contributor to the depressed P/S. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
