Caution ahead of major high-tech corporate earnings also weighed on the market, keeping it weak throughout the day and expanding the decline towards the end.

Influenced by the drop in US stocks and the appreciation of the yen in the exchange market, the Tokyo market began trading with a seller's advantage. The SOX index, a Philadelphia Semiconductor Stock Index, fell more than 7% from the previous day, causing a sharp drop in semiconductor stocks, and led the Nikkei Average to fall below the 37,000 yen level. The selling pressure began and resulted in the Nikkei Average dropping by over 2,000 yen at one point.
