Fisco Japan ·  Aug 1 11:38

As of the close 1 day ago, the Nikkei average constituent stocks had 15 increases, 210 declines, and 0 unchanged.

The Nikkei average fell significantly, ending morning trading at 38,094.24 yen (approximately 1.42 billion shares) down 1,007.58 yen (-2.58%) from the previous day.

The US stock market rose on July 31. The Dow Jones rose by 99.46 points (+0.24%) to 40,842.79, the Nasdaq rose by 451.98 points (+2.64%) to 17,599.40, and the S&P 500 rose by 85.86 points (+1.58%) to 5,522.30 at the close of trading. The opening was mixed ahead of the outcome of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) announcement, but bullish earnings from major high-tech companies led to strong buying throughout the day and kept the market up. Although, the Federal Reserve Board (FRB) left policy interest rates unchanged as expected during the FOMC, Chairman Powell's hint of a rate cut in September during the subsequent press conference helped to increase market expectations and ended up pushing the market higher.

Despite the rise in US stocks, the Tokyo market opened with a selling bias due to the acceleration of the yen's appreciation against the US dollar, with the exchange rate reaching the 149 yen level. The Nikkei average fell sharply to approach the July 26 low of 37,737.88 after opening at 38,781.56 yen reflecting the effect. As a result of the sharp drop in the Nikkei average, the Nikkei average VI rose temporarily to the 23-point range. Prime market trading volume expanded to 3.2 trillion yen.

Among the Nikkei average constituent stocks, Konica Minolta <4902>, Yamaha <7951>, Mitsubishi Electric <6503>, Panasonic HD <6752>, and Alps Alpine <6770> became selling pressures due to their earnings impact. Real estate stocks were generally sold, including Sumitomo Realty <8830>, Mitsubishi Estate <8802>, Mitsui Fudosan <8801>, Tokyo Tatemono <8804>, and Tokyu Fudosan Holdings <3289>, due to the negative reaction to BOJ Governor Ueda's statement the day before that, "As long as the economy and price outlook permits, we will continue to raise interest rates."

On the other hand, Advantest <6857>, Sumitomo Pharma <4506>, Sociomedia Next <6526>, and Hitachi <6501> were bought in response to positive earnings results and structural reforms. In addition, some banking stocks were solid, such as Resona Holdings <8308>, Fukuoka Financial Group <8354>, Concordia Financial <7186>, and Shizuoka FG <5831>, among others.

While all industries saw selling pressure, the real estate, transportation equipment, machinery, insurance, and electric and gas industries stood out as the biggest losers.
