In the first half of 2024, the sales of electric heavy trucks in China reached 0.028 million vehicles, an increase of 141.8% year-on-year, and the electrification of the entire heavy truck industry increased significantly to 5.6%. The installation volume of lithium-ion batteries used in Chinese electric heavy trucks from January to June 2024 was 11.4GWh.

According to EVTank research and iweconomy's joint update of the "White Paper on the Development of China's Electric Heavy Truck Industry (2024)", the sales of Chinese electric heavy trucks in the first half of 2024 was 0.028 million vehicles, a year-on-year increase of 141.8%, and the electrification of the entire heavy truck industry increased significantly to 5.6%. The installation volume of lithium-ion batteries used in Chinese electric heavy trucks from January to June 2024 was 11.4GWh.

Looking ahead, EVTank predicts in the white paper that the penetration rate of electric heavy trucks will increase to 6.0% and 17.4% respectively in 2025 and 2030. The total sales of Chinese electric heavy trucks will exceed 0.3 million vehicles by 2030.

In terms of market competition, in the first half of 2024, XCMG continued to occupy the top of the list with a market share of 17.5%, followed by Sany Group, Sinotruk, and Yutong Bus. The market share of the top four companies totaled 52.5%, and the sales of head companies are relatively concentrated.

In addition, according to EVTank statistics, lithium-ion batteries are still the main battery type for electric heavy trucks. The sales of fuel cell heavy trucks reached 1347 units from January to June 2024, which also led to the growth of fuel cell installation volume. Major companies include Guohong Hydrogen Energy, Shanghai Reshine, Yuntoo Hydrogen Energy, Koonhua New Energy, Cummins New Energy, etc., of which Guohong Hydrogen Energy has the largest market share of 30% for supporting fuel cells. The main supply is Dongfeng Liuqi, Feichi Auto, and Shaanqi Group.

In terms of major lithium battery companies for electric heavy trucks, the entire industry is still dominated by Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL), but as more second-tier battery companies enter the market, the market share of head companies has declined. In the first half of 2024, Contemporary Amperex Technology maintained its first place with a market share of 72.4%, a decrease of 8.7% from 2023; EVE Energy ranked second with a market share of 16.4%, an increase of 3.7% from 2023; other major supporting companies such as Gotion High-Tech, BYD, and Mengguoli have market shares of 3.2%, 3.1%, and 2.7%, respectively. In terms of supply relationships, Contemporary Amperex Technology supplies almost all electric heavy truck companies, while EVE Energy mainly supports long-distance commercial vehicles, Sany Auto, Shaanqi Group, etc.; Gotion High-Tech mainly supports long-distance commercial vehicles, SAIC Hongyan, Anhui Jianghuai Automobile Group Corp., Ltd., etc.; BYD mainly supports Sinotruk and XCMG.

In terms of electric motor companies, EVTank data shows that the major electric motor companies supporting electric heavy trucks in the first half of 2024 include Suzhou GreenControl, Xugong New Energy, Tevva Motors, Xi'an Zhide, and Fastert. Among them, Suzhou GreenControl continued to occupy the first place in the electric motor market for electric heavy trucks with a market share of 18.0%, and its leading position remained stable. The market share of the top five companies accounted for 62.2%, a decrease of 7.2% from 2023, and the market concentration decreased slightly.
