At the closing time on the 26th, the number of rising stocks in the Nikkei average constituent stocks was 98, the number of falling stocks was 122, and the number of unchanged stocks was 5.
The U.S. stock market on the 25th was mixed. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 81.20 dollars (+0.20%) to 39,935.07 dollars, the Nasdaq fell 160.68 points (-0.93%) to 17,181.73, and the S&P 500 fell 27.91 points (-0.51%) to 5,399.22 at the end of the trading day. Risk aversion remained strong, and the market opened mixed. However, due to the better-than-expected growth in domestic gross domestic product (GDP) and consumption in the April-June quarter, the pessimistic view of the economy retreated and buying back prices regained the positive territory. However, pre-closing sales ahead of the release of important inflation indicators capped the upside, and the Nasdaq lost steam due to weakness in high-tech stocks, ending mixed.
Despite the Dow increasing, Tokyo market started with a dominant sell due to the continued weakness of US high-tech stocks. Although the Nikkei average temporarily rebounded to the 38,000 yen level, semiconductor stocks dropped sharply in the afternoon session. The Nikkei average closed with a negative candlestick, marking an 8-day consecutive decline since September 27, 2021.
At the closing bell, the Nikkei average was 37,667.41 yen, down 202.10 yen (-0.53%) from the previous day. The trading volume on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market was 1.7 billion, with a trading value of 4.435 trillion yen. Among the business sectors, transportation equipment, insurance, electricity and gas, air transportation, and services declined, while petroleum and coal products, metal products, machinery, pulp and paper, and rubber products rose. On the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market, 42% of the stocks rose, while 52% of the stocks fell.
The top decline contributor was Tokyo Electron Ltd. <8035>, which pushed down the Nikkei average by about 135 yen with one stock. The second was Advantest Corp. <6857>, followed by SoftBank Group <9984>, Recruit Holdings Co. Ltd. <6098>, Toyota Motor Corp. <7203>, Laser Tech Co. Ltd. <6920>, and Daiichi Sankyo Co. Ltd. <4568>.
On the other hand, the top contributor to the rise in stocks was Fast Retailing Co. Ltd. <9983>, which pushed up the Nikkei average by about 70 yen with one stock. The second was Chugai Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd. <4519>, followed by Canon Inc. <7751>, Shin-Etsu Chemical Co. Ltd. <4063>, Fanuc Corp. <6954>, Fujitsu Ltd. <6702> and Daikin Industries, Ltd. unsponsored ADR <6367>.
