Summary of the start of the afternoon session
In the afternoon session, the Nikkei average started slightly above the morning close (38057.61 yen) and expanded its gains by 215.47 yen to 38,084.98 yen. During the lunchtime, Nikkei 225 futures traded in a range of 37,970 yen to 38,070 yen. The USD/JPY exchange rate has been at around 153.80-90 yen per dollar since around 9am JST, about 30 yen cheaper than the previous day's close. The Asian market saw the Shanghai Composite Index rise strongly in the morning, but then fall by about 0.2% later, while the Hang Seng Index in Hong Kong remained around the previous day's close with resistance at the upper levels.
The Tokyo market started with some buying ahead of the previous day's close. The Nikkei average, which had fallen for seven consecutive days until yesterday, is expected to attract bargain hunters as it has fallen more than 3,400 yen. On the other hand, some investors are hesitant to actively buy, as they want to see the June personal consumption expenditure (PCE) price index and the Bank of Japan monetary policy meeting and FOMC in the United States, both of which will be held next week.
In the sectors, oil and coal products, metal products, and machinery were among the top gainers, while transportation equipment, fisheries and forestry, and electric and gas utilities were among the top losers.
In the top ten stocks by trading value on the TSE Prime Market, Fujitsu (6702), NRI (4307), Canon Inc.-Spons ADR (7751), Chugai Pharmaceutical (4519), IHI (7013), NEC (6701), SUMCO (3436), Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (7011), Hitachi (6501), and Fuji Electric (6504) were the highest, while Renesas (6723), Nissan Motor (7201), KOKUSAI Electric (6525), Laser Technology (6920), Tokyo Electron (8035), Toyota (7203), Daiichi Sankyo (4568), Asics (7936), Recruit Holdings (6098), and Advantest (6857) were down.
