Lenovo: AI will be introduced to all PCs by 2027

On July 24, Luca Rossi, president of IDG of Lenovo Group, the world's largest PC manufacturer, said that it is planned that all new Lenovo PCs will be AI PCs by 2027.

In an interview with “Nihon Keizai Shimbun,” Luca Rossi predicted: “Every PC will be equipped with a certain level of artificial intelligence.”

Lenovo began selling the Copilot+ PC this year — a new Windows computer designed to run artificial intelligence developed by Microsoft. Lenovo is launching AI PCs in China, the US, Japan, etc., with high-end models being launched first.

“Currently, we are seeing a strong interest in AI PCs from US and Chinese users,” Rossi said. AI PCs are equipped with GPU graphics processing units and NPU neural processing units to handle artificial intelligence applications more smoothly.

According to IDC's latest data, Lenovo is leading the global PC market, accounting for nearly 23% of shipments in the second quarter of 2024.

Lenovo Group sees AI PCs as a way to stimulate new demand. “We expect the market to remain largely flat this year and resume growth in 2025 and 2026,” Rossi said. Lenovo expects the growth rate to be “between 5% and 10%” in 2025 and “around 5%” in 2026.

Among them, one major driving force is the number of PCs that will need to be updated in the next few years.

“There are probably over 0.3 billion devices that have been in use for 3 to 5 years,” Rossi said. He said another imminent factor is that Microsoft will end support for Windows 10 in 2025. Lenovo takes into account the language, culture, and laws and regulations of each market when developing AI PCs. He said Lenovo is designing many artificial intelligence features in-house and will work with partners in different regions.

In the Chinese market, based on GM models such as Ali Tongyi Qianwen, Lenovo also carried out a series of cutting-edge technological innovations, and eventually pioneered the launch of AI PCs in the true sense of the word, equipped with large personal models and intelligent devices in the industry.

Rossi said many consumers will replace their old computers with AI PCs. AI PCs will account for nearly 10% of the market this year, but may reach 50% or 60% by 2026.

Olivier Blanchard, director of research at Futurum and PC market expert, previously stated, “Powerful new AI features, such as assistants, agents, and other generative AI applications, may not immediately become the main drivers for consumer purchases. But as users begin to experience them and realize that these tools will make their lives and work extremely easy, the value of AI features will gain attention and accelerate demand for AI PCs.”

In addition to PCs, Lenovo aims to achieve double-digit growth in the smartphone business within the next two to three years. After Lenovo bought Motorola Mobile from Google in 2014, profits are now improving, thanks to the strong Latin American market. The North American business has also been successful, with Rossi pointing to Europe and Asia as the next growth market.

“I think in Asia, Japan and India are probably our top priority markets,” he said, partly because of the demand for high-end products.

Facing global geopolitical challenges, Rossi said, “We have our own manufacturing network around the world, not only in China, but also in Japan, Mexico, Europe, Brazil, and India. ”
