As of the closing on the 19th, there were 66 stocks that went up and 159 stocks that went down among the stocks in the Nikkei average composition constituency, and 0 stocks remained unchanged.

The US stock market fell on the 18th. The Dow Jones average closed at 40,665.02 yen, down 533.06 dollars (-1.29%), the NASDAQ fell 125.70 points (-0.70%) to 17,871.22, and the S&P500 fell 43.68 points (-0.78%) to 5,544.59. Following higher-than-expected employment and manufacturing-related indicators that diminished expectations of early interest rate cuts, stocks fell from the opening. The Dow, which had been hitting record highs for days, accelerated its decline towards the end of the day due to profit-taking sales and increased caution towards corporate earnings. The high-tech sector continued to be sold-off, and the NASDAQ also fell further.

Following the decline in US stocks, the Tokyo market continued to be dominated by selling at the start of trading. After the Nikkei average fell below the 40,000 yen level, semiconductor-related stocks such as Tokyo Electron <8035> and Advantest <6857>, which rebounded due to the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index (SOX Index), supported the market and it was in a deadlock around 40,000 yen. The index avoided a sharp drop, but the number of declining stocks on the Prime market exceeded 60%, and trading volume also decreased, resulting in a weak market.

At the closing of the market, the Nikkei average was 40,063.79 yen, down 62.56 yen (-0.16%) from the previous day. The trading volume on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market was 1,503,386,000 shares. The trading value was 3,816.7 billion yen. By industry, mining, electric power and gas utilities, air transportation, petroleum and coal products, marine transportation and others declined, while precision instruments, other products, electric appliances, metal products, warehouse and transportation-related industries and others rose. The number of rising stocks on the Prime market was 30%, while the number of falling stocks was 67%.
