The Nikkei average fell for the third consecutive day. It closed the morning session at 39,952.62 yen (approximately 0.7 billion 50 million shares traded), down 173.73 yen (-0.43%) from the previous day.

The US stock market fell on the 18th. The Dow Jones average closed at 40,665.02 yen, down 533.06 dollars (-1.29%), the NASDAQ fell 125.70 points (-0.70%) to 17,871.22, and the S&P500 fell 43.68 points (-0.78%) to 5,544.59. Following higher-than-expected employment and manufacturing-related indicators that diminished expectations of early interest rate cuts, stocks fell from the opening. In terms of industry, only the two sectors of precision instruments and electric appliances rose, while electric and gas, air transportation, marine transportation, real estate, and pharmaceuticals all fell.

The top contributors to the decline were First Retailing <9983>, which pushed the Nikkei down by about 34 yen with a single stock. Softbank Group <9984> followed in second place, followed by Disco <6146>, Chugai Pharmaceutical <4519>, Fanuc <6954>, Astellas Pharma <4503>, and Recruit Holdings <6098>.
