The US stock market fell. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 40,665.02, down 533.06 points, and the Nasdaq traded at 17,871.22, down 125.70 points.

Employment and manufacturing related indicators exceeded financial estimates, causing expectations of an early rate cut to decline, leading to a decline after the opening bell. The Dow, which had been setting new highs daily, fell further as profit-taking selling, along with more caution about corporate earnings, added to the selling pressure, and the high-tech sector continued to be sold, leading to a continued decline in the Nasdaq. By sector, durable consumer goods/clothing and energy rose, while banks fell.

Meta Platforms, which operates the social media website Facebook (FB), rose after reports surfaced that it plans to jointly develop smart glasses with French eyewear brand Ray-Ban Optical.
