OpenAI launched GPT-4o mini on Thursday, which it claims is the "most powerful and cost-effective" model and plans to integrate images, videos, and audio into this model in the future.

This mini AI model is a derivative product of GPT-4o, the fastest and most powerful model OpenAI has released so far, which was released in May of this year. The "o" in GPT-4o stands for "omni" (all-around), and this model has improved its capabilities in audio, video, and text, can handle 50 different languages, and has improved both speed and quality.

According to media reports, OpenAI, supported by Microsoft, is now valued at over $80 billion. Although it still dominates the generative AI market, the company is facing increasing competition pressure. OpenAI also needs to find a way to make money because the company has spent a lot of money on processors and infrastructure to build and train its models.

The mini AI model announced on Thursday is part of OpenAI's commitment to "multimodality," which means providing a wide range of AI-generated media (such as text, images, audio, and video) in one tool: ChatGPT.

Last year, OpenAI's COO Brad Lightcap told the media,

"The world is multimodal. If you think about how we as humans process and engage with the world, we see things, we hear things, we speak – the world isn't just text. So for us, having only text and code as a single modality, single interface always feels incomplete because what these models are capable of and what they can do goes so far beyond that."

The company announced that GPT-4o mini will be available to ChatGPT's free users, ChatGPT Plus, and team subscription users from Thursday and will be available to ChatGPT Enterprise users next week.
