Omdia predicts that the XR industry will still be in a slump in the next one to two years.

According to the app of Zhī tōng cai jīng, Omdia's latest research shows that although the XR market, including AR, VR, and MR, is currently experiencing a downturn, leading brands are working together to promote sales. In 2024, the main focus of the XR market is Apple Vision Pro. However, the high price is expected to limit its sales and make it unable to significantly promote the growth of the entire market. Omdia predicts that the XR industry will still be in a slump in the next one to two years. Although the terminal shipments can only maintain low growth or slight fluctuations, due to the inevitable shift from single display to dual display, the shipments of near-eye displays are expected to have more significant growth.

The slump in the XR market has led to significant layoffs at top companies, and some smart phone brands have stopped or reduced their XR businesses. Despite these challenges, industry leaders are committed to revitalizing the market and driving growth in the next few years.

In terms of hardware, Meta Platforms and PICO will launch Quest 3S and PICO 4S in the second half of 2024, both of which are priced lower than the previous generation products to promote sales.

In terms of software, Sony's PlayStation VR2 (PS VR2) now supports PC VR games, breaking the previous exclusivity limited to PS5, which is expected to drive sales growth of PS VR2. In addition, Meta Platforms announced for the first time that it will open-source its XR operating system to third-party terminal device manufacturers, including Asus, Lenovo, and Microsoft Xbox. Meta will also focus on improving the quality and quantity of its platforms and application software to enhance the sales of hardware terminals.

Although the shipment of near-eye displays is expected to remain flat in 2024, long-term forecasts are still optimistic.

In 2024, the main focus of the XR market is Apple Vision Pro. However, the high price is expected to limit its sales and make it unable to significantly promote the growth of the entire market. Omdia predicts that compared with 2023, the total shipments of XR displays in 2024 will remain stable, and the shipments of near-eye displays will also remain flat at 17.2 million pieces. Even so, Vision Pro has significantly increased the market share of silicon-based organic light-emitting diode (OLEDoS) displays.

Regarding market fluctuations, Omdia's senior analyst Kimi Lin said: "We expect the XR industry to still be in a slump in the next one to two years. Although terminal shipments can only maintain low growth or slight fluctuations, due to the inevitable shift from single display to dual display, the shipments of near-eye displays are expected to have more significant growth."

"As display, optical, and other component technologies continue to advance, Omdia is optimistic about the long-term outlook. It is expected that the shipments of near-eye displays will increase rapidly from 2027, reaching 92.9 million pieces by 2030."
