Recent 29% Pullback Isn't Enough to Hurt Long-term Ardelyx (NASDAQ:ARDX) Shareholders, They're Still up 108% Over 5 Years

Simply Wall St ·  Jul 7 21:30

The Ardelyx, Inc. (NASDAQ:ARDX) share price has had a bad week, falling 29%. But in stark contrast, the returns over the last half decade have impressed. In fact, the share price is 108% higher today. So while it's never fun to see a share price fall, it's important to look at a longer time horizon. Only time will tell if there is still too much optimism currently reflected in the share price.

While this past week has detracted from the company's five-year return, let's look at the recent trends of the underlying business and see if the gains have been in alignment.

Given that Ardelyx didn't make a profit in the last twelve months, we'll focus on revenue growth to form a quick view of its business development. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually desire strong revenue growth. That's because fast revenue growth can be easily extrapolated to forecast profits, often of considerable size.

In the last 5 years Ardelyx saw its revenue grow at 73% per year. Even measured against other revenue-focussed companies, that's a good result. Meanwhile, its share price performance certainly reflects the strong growth, given the share price grew at 16% per year, compound, during the period. This suggests the market has well and truly recognized the progress the business has made. To our minds that makes Ardelyx worth investigating - it may have its best days ahead.

A Different Perspective

It's good to see that Ardelyx has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 57% in the last twelve months. That's better than the annualised return of 16% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently. In the best case scenario, this may hint at some real business momentum, implying that now could be a great time to delve deeper. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Consider risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 3 warning signs for Ardelyx you should know about.
