A document submitted on Friday showed that Talen Energy has requested that U.S. regulatory agencies reject questions raised about Amazon's recent acquisition of data centers.

Finance and Economics App learned that Talen Energy (TLNE.US) has requested that U.S. regulatory bodies reject questions raised about Amazon's recent acquisition of data centers. The transaction has been opposed by some power companies, who say it could increase public electricity costs.Utilitarian concerns raised by companies including American Electric Power and Exelon Energy with regard to the transaction were inaccurate, according to Talen. The interconnection agreement they offer for Amazon data center sites would not result in increased electricity costs for their customers or grid reliability issues.

Talen said in a filing with the Federal Energy Management Commission (FERC) that "this is an illegal attempt. They're trying to hijack this limited interconnection service agreement revision process and turn it into a temporary national referendum on the future of data center loads."

Technology companies are competing to obtain large amounts of power supply to provide electricity and cooling for data centers or large computer warehouses that require the launch of generative AI and other technologies. Nuclear energy, which is almost carbon-free and provides round-the-clock power, has become the preferred choice of the data center industry.

The decision of the Federal Energy Management Commission could set a precedent for deals like Talen's.The transaction allows these centers to quickly supply power without struggling in long or years-long interconnection queues, since data centers are located at the power plants that supply them.

In March of this year, Talen announced that it had reached an agreement to sell its nuclear power and data center campus in Pennsylvania to Amazon Web Services (AWS). The deal will provide Amazon's computer warehouses with up to 960 MW of electricity, enough to power about 1 million households.

Last month, several power companies, including American Electric Power and Exelon Energy, requested that the Federal Energy Management Commission hold a hearing to further examine Talen's interconnection agreement with Amazon or outright deny it.

Talen says that if the Federal Energy Management Commission allows a hearing, or denies its plan, it will have a chilling effect on the expansion of data centers and prevent the construction of new power plants during a period of electricity demand growth that the United States has not seen in decades.

American Electric Power and Exelon Energy said that if approved, the deal could result in taxpayers bearing the unfavorable costs of electricity infrastructure or suddenly consuming a large amount of power load from the power grid when factories that serve data centers as direct sources of energy are interrupted.

At present, it is unclear when the Federal Energy Management Commission will make a ruling on this case.

In 2023, the company's overall sales volume of 18,000 kiloliters, +28.10% year-on-year, significant growth. Product structure, 10-30 billion yuan products operating income of 401/1288/60 million yuan respectively.
