According to United Nations data, China is leading other countries in the invention of generative AI, such as chatbots, and the number of patents applied for is six times that of its closest competitor, the USA. Some of the top companies applying for patents include ByteDance, Alibaba (09988.HK), and Microsoft (MSFT.US).
According to data from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the number of patent applications for generative AI has exceeded 50,000 in the past decade, with a quarter of them submitted last year alone. From 2014 to 2023, China submitted more than 38,000 inventions related to generative AI, while the USA submitted only 6,276 during the same period. China's patent applications cover a wide range of fields, including autonomous driving and document management.
Data shows that South Korea, Japan, and India are ranked third, fourth, and fifth, respectively, with India having the fastest growth.
