[Nikkei Stock Average and TOPIX (Table)]

Nikkei Average: 39,669.97; +38.91. TOPIX: 2,838.89; +14.61. In the afternoon session, the Nikkei Average started with a smaller gain from the morning close (39,780.58 yen) than the previous day's closing, rising by 38.91 yen to 39,669.97 yen. During the lunchtime break, the Nikkei 225 futures fell in the range of 39,640 yen to 39,750 yen. The dollar-yen remained at a level of around 161.60-70 yen, about 10 yen lower in yen and higher in dollar since around 9 a.m. Asian markets saw the Shanghai Composite Index generally trending at a slightly high level, while the Hang Seng Index in Hong Kong was in the positive territory but showed some fatigue, rising about 0.3%.

The afternoon session of the Tokyo market started with selling ahead of buying compared to the morning closing. Some pointed out the weight of the market upside as the Nikkei Average failed to reach the psychologically important level of 40,000 yen both yesterday and in the morning session today. On the other hand, the yen and dollar rates continued to move at a lower yen and higher dollar level, and although there is a sense of caution against intervention, it seems to be supporting the stock prices of exporting companies by pushing up their earnings.
