The US stock market rebounded. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 39,169.52, up 50.66, while the Nasdaq Composite closed at 17,879.30, up 146.70 points.
The European stock market rose due to buying following favorable election results in France. However, it turned negative due to concerns about growth slowdown, as the June ISM manufacturing activity index fell slightly below market expectations, marking the third consecutive month of contraction. The rise in long-term interest rates also weighed on the market, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average remained near the previous day's closing price, while the Nasdaq Composite was supported by strong demand for companies such as Microsoft with high expectations for artificial intelligence (AI). In terms of sectors, the auto and auto parts sectors rose sharply, followed by technology, hardware, equipment, and software and services. Conversely, consumer services, healthcare equipment and services, and materials fell.
Chewy (CHWY), a pet supplies company, surged in after-hours trading before plummeting after investor Keith Gill, known as 'Roaring Kitty', disclosed buying 9 million shares of Chuwi stock, worth 6.6% of the company, to regulators. His holdings in leading game company GameStop (GME) were also sold.
Aircraft manufacturer Boeing (BA) announced that it has agreed to acquire Spirit AeroSystems Holdings (SPR), which designs and manufactures aircraft, through a stock exchange. Both Boeing and Spirit rose. Electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla (TSLA) rose due to expectations for high passenger carried in the second quarter, which will be announced this week. Cruise operators Carnival (CCL) and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH) fell due to concerns about Hurricane Beryl, which is expected to cause significant damage in the Caribbean. Beryl is a category four hurricane on a five-point scale.
New York Fed President Williams said he was confident that the central bank could achieve its 2% inflation target.
