P.A.M. Transportation Services' (NASDAQ:PTSI) One-year Decline in Earnings Translates Into Losses for Shareholders

Simply Wall St ·  Jul 1 19:11

This week we saw the P.A.M. Transportation Services, Inc. (NASDAQ:PTSI) share price climb by 16%. But in truth the last year hasn't been good for the share price. In fact the stock is down 36% in the last year, well below the market return.

On a more encouraging note the company has added US$54m to its market cap in just the last 7 days, so let's see if we can determine what's driven the one-year loss for shareholders.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

Unhappily, P.A.M. Transportation Services had to report a 81% decline in EPS over the last year. This fall in the EPS is significantly worse than the 36% the share price fall. So the market may not be too worried about the EPS figure, at the moment -- or it may have expected earnings to drop faster.

A Different Perspective

P.A.M. Transportation Services shareholders are down 36% for the year, but the market itself is up 23%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 3%, each year, over five years. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
