According to the report from the Zhicheng finance and economics APP, as the dispute between the government's request for Meta Platforms (meta platforms) to continue paying content fees to local media institutions continues to escalate, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has accused the social media company of arrogance and irresponsibility.
According to reports, on Friday, when asked whether Meta would ban news on its platform if the government deemed it to fall under the category of news media negotiation rules, Mia Garlick, Meta's regional policy manager, said, "All options are on the table."
According to the regulations promulgated in 2021, Australian Assistant Treasurer Stephen Jones can "designate" Meta to force the company to discuss payment issues with news institutions, or face fines equivalent to 10% of its Australian revenue.
Albanese said at a media conference Saturday in Melbourne, "They have a responsibility to publish news on their own platforms. The arrogance displayed by these international social media companies is not consistent with the social responsibility they undertake."
Alphabet (GOOGL.US) and Meta reached agreements in 2021 to pay content to several Australian news agencies, but Meta said earlier this year that it would not renew commercial agreements. Media companies Seven West Media Ltd. and Nine Entertainment Co. pointed out this week that the expiration of the deal was one reason for their staff cuts.
Albanese said, "They should fulfill the promises they made before."
