In the showdown with Trump this morning, Biden's performance was unsatisfactory, which plunged the Democratic Party into chaos.
According to the Wall Street Journal, officials are working to assess Biden's prospects, as he stumbled and stuttered through many of the questions in the debate, exacerbating concerns among voters about his ability, given his advanced age, to become president.
For months, many Democrats believed the 81-year-old president had the ability to win re-election. However, after the debate, some Democratic strategists, donors, and advisers who provide advice to donors said they were shocked by Biden's performance, sparking private Democratic discussions about the possibility of replacing him as the presidential candidate. However, they acknowledge that the likelihood of Biden withdrawing from the race is still low.
One of Biden's supporters said he had to turn off the TV several times. Another said his performance even made 78-year-old Trump look like a politician, even though Trump repeated incorrect information throughout the entire 90-minute debate. Some expressed concern about Biden's fundraising ability.
"I am very worried," said a Democratic congressman, who added that voters dislike Trump but are uncomfortable with Biden's performance. "I pray it's not too late to replace him. This could all have been avoided."
Another Democratic official said many Democratic congressmen felt panicked after the debate, saying that some people, including loyalists, wanted to nominate a new candidate.
"Biden had one job to do tonight (the first debate time in the United States), and he didn't do it," said former Senator Claire McCaskill. "The one thing he needed to do was make America believe that he could do this job at this age, and he failed at that."
Advisers to several well-known Democrats who could become candidates for the presidential election in 2028 revealed that they had received messages from donors expressing concern about Biden's performance.
If Biden announces his withdrawal before the Democratic National Convention in August (a less likely possibility), it could trigger an open convention, in which case delegates could freely abandon their commitments to Biden during the primaries and support a new candidate. If he withdraws after the convention, the party's presidential candidate list will be decided by a special meeting according to the rules of the National Democratic Committee.
Biden rejected calls to withdraw and concerns about his debate performance. "I think we did well. It's hard to debate a liar," Biden told reporters after the debate, referring to Trump as a "liar."
One of Biden's advisers said the campaign team never expected the election to be decided by one event or one night.
