On June 28th, the latest report released by research institution Canalys showed that in the first quarter of 2024, the shipment volume of personal computers (PCs) (excluding tablets) in the United States increased by 5% year-on-year, reaching 14.8 million units. The growth momentum mainly came from the consumer market and small and medium-sized enterprises, both of which saw a year-on-year growth in shipment volume of more than 9% in the first quarter.
From the perspective of manufacturer rankings, in the first quarter of 2024, Lenovo's shipment volume of personal computers (PCs) in the market was 2.529 million units. Looking at the shipment volume list, Lenovo's annual growth rate was 22.4%, ranking first. HP's annual growth rate was -2.5%, while Dell's annual growth rate showed a downward trend, at -5.4%.
Canalys analysis believes that the continuous discount activities after the year-end holiday drove consumers' demand for PCs at the beginning of 2024. The performance of the commercial market also rebounded in the first quarter. The growth in shipment volume among small and medium-sized enterprises indicates that the trend of Windows 10 updates is becoming a reality. With follow-up from enterprise customers, the near-term outlook for the market is still very optimistic; Canalys expects stronger momentum for the update cycle in the next four quarters. This timing also coincides with the availability of more edge AI functions on the market. The new products and user experiences of the Windows and Apple ecosystems will surely stimulate the enthusiasm of consumers and enterprises. It is predicted that the United States will become the leader in adopting AI PCs, and manufacturers and their partners will prioritize market entry strategies to seize the major opportunities for customers to upgrade to high-end devices.
Canalys predicts that the US PC market will maintain a strong momentum by the end of 2024 and will climb to a higher level by 2025. In 2024, the shipment volume of PCs in the United States will increase by 5%, and by 2025 it will further increase by 8%, reaching 75 million units.
