Insiders At Nexstar Media Group Sold US$5.6m In Stock, Alluding To Potential Weakness

Simply Wall St ·  Jun 27 21:01

Over the past year, many Nexstar Media Group, Inc. (NASDAQ:NXST) insiders sold a significant stake in the company which may have piqued investors' interest. When analyzing insider transactions, it is usually more valuable to know whether insiders are buying versus knowing if they are selling, as the latter sends an ambiguous message. However, when multiple insiders sell stock over a specific duration, shareholders should take notice as that could possibly be a red flag.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

Nexstar Media Group Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the President of Distribution & Strategy, Dana Zimmer, sold US$852k worth of shares at a price of US$162 per share. That means that an insider was selling shares at around the current price of US$157. While we don't usually like to see insider selling, it's more concerning if the sales take place at a lower price. In this case, the big sale took place at around the current price, so it's not too bad (but it's still not a positive).

Nexstar Media Group insiders didn't buy any shares over the last year. You can see the insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year depicted in the chart below. If you want to know exactly who sold, for how much, and when, simply click on the graph below!

Nexstar Media Group Insiders Are Selling The Stock

The last three months saw significant insider selling at Nexstar Media Group. In total, Independent Director John Muse sold US$58k worth of shares in that time, and we didn't record any purchases whatsoever. This may suggest that some insiders think that the shares are not cheap.

Insider Ownership

Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. Nexstar Media Group insiders own 6.0% of the company, currently worth about US$310m based on the recent share price. This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.

What Might The Insider Transactions At Nexstar Media Group Tell Us?

An insider sold stock recently, but they haven't been buying. And there weren't any purchases to give us comfort, over the last year. It is good to see high insider ownership, but the insider selling leaves us cautious. While it's good to be aware of what's going on with the insider's ownership and transactions, we make sure to also consider what risks are facing a stock before making any investment decision.
