Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. (Headquarters: Chuo-ku, Osaka; President: Osamu Inoue; hereinafter referred to as 'the company') will start selling its pedestrian detection millimeter wave sensor NEXUSEYE*1, which achieves high detection accuracy even at night or in bad weather conditions, from October 2024. The global demand for sensors capable of detecting pedestrians is increasing to reduce the number of traffic accidents involving pedestrians and to assist the crossing of vulnerable road users. Although pedestrian traffic accidents often occur in poor visibility conditions at night or in bad weather, conventional sensors (such as image sensors*2 and LiDAR*3) have the challenge of deteriorating detection accuracy under such conditions. To solve this problem, the company has developed the NEXUSEYE millimeter-wave sensor, which adopts a radar method using millimeter-wave radio waves and can reliably detect weak reflection signals from pedestrians using its unique antenna technology and detection algorithm.

'NEXUSEYE' is a highly performance sensor with many excellent features, such as a wide detection area, high detection accuracy, and easy installation and maintenance. For example, even in rainy weather at night, it can detect pedestrians up to 60m away with almost 100% accuracy. There is also no need for lens surface cleaning that is necessary for conventional sensors.
First of all, starting from October 2024, the company will offer its products in the North American market, where the increasing number of traffic accidents involving pedestrians has become a social issue. We will start by working with our exclusive partner for this market, Iteris, Inc. (Headquarters: Austin, Texas; CEO: Joe Bergera).
Moving forward, we will continue to provide various sensors globally to achieve a reduction in traffic accidents and smooth traffic flow and contribute to realizing a safe, comfortable, and environmentally friendly transportation society.
