The yield on 30-year US Treasury bonds was 4.38%, and the yield on 10-year US Treasury bonds was 4.249%.
The US stock market had mixed results. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed down 299.05 points at 39,112.16, while the Nasdaq Composite closed up 220.84 points at 17,717.65.
The opening was mixed. Concern about the outlook for the economy due to the decline in the June consumer confidence index and the cautious attitude of Federal Reserve Board officials about interest rate cuts weighed on the market. The rebound of semiconductor company Nvidia supported investor sentiment, and semiconductor and artificial intelligence (AI) stocks were bought. Nvidia had fallen more than 10% from its recent high and entered a correction phase, but there seemed to be a sense of value in the stock. By sector, semiconductor and related manufacturing equipment rose sharply, while media and entertainment, automobiles and auto parts also rose. However, durable consumer goods and apparel, real estate, and materials fell.
Cruise ship operator Carnival (CCL) rose on strong earnings and a positive outlook that exceeded market expectations. Airbus (AIR), the aircraft manufacturer, lowered its full-year performance forecast and delivery target for aircraft, causing a decline. Boeing, the same industry, was also sold off. Spirit AeroSystems Holdings (SPR), which designs and manufactures aircraft, reportedly switched from a cash-only acquisition proposal that Boeing had made to a proposal centered on stock exchange, causing a decline.
Walmart (WMT), the largest retailer, fell as CFO Rainey said the second quarter (May to July) is the most difficult quarter of the year in terms of same-store sales. Discount retailer Target (TGT) fell as it announced it would hold a sale for members at the same time as Amazon's Prime Sale, causing prices to fall.
Federal Reserve Board member Bowman warned of upside risks to inflation expectations, including tight labor markets and geopolitical situations. She reiterated the need to maintain policy interest rates at high levels for a while.
