Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) plans to recall 552,188 of its 2014 F-150 vehicles in the U.S.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that this recall is due to a potential issue causing the vehicle an "unexpected transmission" downshift into first gear.

According to the regulator, a loss of signal between the transmission output shaft speed sensor and the powertrain control module can cause a downshift, potentially leading to a loss of vehicle control, irrespective of vehicle speed.

"Dealers will update the powertrain control module software, free of charge," according to a statement.

In April, Ford recalled around 456,565 units of certain compact SUVs and pickup trucks in the U.S. due to a low battery issue causing loss of drive power.
