Uber (UBER.US) announced yesterday (24th) that this year marks the 10th anniversary of the company's entry into the Hong Kong market. In the past ten years, Uber has traveled more than 14.5 million kilometers with Hong Kong people, equivalent to exploring Saturn once. In the past decade, there have been a total of about 3.6 million passengers in Hong Kong, with more than 100 million trips completed.
Uber's General Manager for Hong Kong, Ching Cheung Ting, said that a recent survey found that 70% of Hong Kong people said that Uber has had a positive impact on their lives, and nearly 90% of passengers welcome Uber's service in Hong Kong. He mentioned that Uber's commitment to Hong Kong remains firm, and will continue to look for innovative ways to launch new options and features, providing Hong Kong passengers with a better ride experience and enhancing their daily travel experience.
He hopes that the Hong Kong government can legalize online car-hailing. If Hong Kong needs to license and regulate the Uber platform and its drivers in the future, the company is willing to cooperate. He also agreed that the Hong Kong government can establish licensing conditions related to safety, but at the same time hopes that the licensing system can still ensure that Uber drivers can work flexibly.
Cheung also emphasized that Uber and taxis are not enemies, and believes that online car-hailing and taxis can coexist. (js/cy)
