The US stock market was mixed on the 21st. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 39150.33, up 15.57 points (+0.04%), the NASDAQ ended the day at 17689.36, down 32.23 points (-0.18%), and the S&P 500 closed at 5464.62, down 8.55 points (-0.16%). The opening was mixed. On the day of the concentrated expiration of US stock-related options called “Triple Witching,” some stocks were sold off for profit-taking adjustments, while buying supported stocks that were lagging behind. The NASDAQ was weighed down by selling of semiconductor companies Nvidia and Micron Technology for the second consecutive day. As the US high-tech stocks were cheap at the end of last week, the Tokyo market started out slightly biased toward selling. The Nikkei Average started gently, but it gradually stabilized and turned around. Although it remained thinly traded, it was observed that sporadic buying came into futures as the yen fell, and the afternoon session gradually expanded the upward momentum and briefly reached the 38,900 yen level.

At the closing of the market, the Nikkei average was 38,804.65 yen, up 208.18 yen (+ 0.54%) compared to the previous business day. The trading volume on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market was 1,386,440,000 shares and the trading value was 3,466.6 billion yen. By industry, transportation equipment, pharmaceuticals, warehouse/transportation-related industry, banking industry, and information and communication industry all rose, while rubber products, non-ferrous metals, service industry, mining, electric/gas industry all fell. The number of advancing stocks on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market was 68%, while the number of declining stocks was 28%.

On the other hand, the top two contributors to the decline in the Nikkei Average were Daikin and Shin-Etsu Chemical, which pushed the Nikkei Average down by about 20 yen with two stocks. In addition, the top two gainers among the Nikkei Average constituent stocks were Nikkoham Co., Ltd., which rose 5.46%, and Chugai Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., which rose 3.90%.
