Don't Ignore The Insider Selling In Roper Technologies

Simply Wall St ·  Jun 23 20:03

Some Roper Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:ROP) shareholders may be a little concerned to see that the Executive VP & CFO, Jason Conley, recently sold a substantial US$2.0m worth of stock at a price of US$563 per share. However, that sale only accounted for 9.4% of their holding, so arguably it doesn't say much about their conviction.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Roper Technologies

In fact, the recent sale by Jason Conley was the biggest sale of Roper Technologies shares made by an insider individual in the last twelve months, according to our records. So what is clear is that an insider saw fit to sell at around the current price of US$561. We generally don't like to see insider selling, but the lower the sale price, the more it concerns us. We note that this sale took place at around the current price, so it isn't a major concern, though it's hardly a good sign.

Does Roper Technologies Boast High Insider Ownership?

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. It's great to see that Roper Technologies insiders own 0.4% of the company, worth about US$250m. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.

So What Does This Data Suggest About Roper Technologies Insiders?

Insiders haven't bought Roper Technologies stock in the last three months, but there was some selling. And there weren't any purchases to give us comfort, over the last year. On the plus side, Roper Technologies makes money, and is growing profits. The company boasts high insider ownership, but we're a little hesitant, given the history of share sales. While it's good to be aware of what's going on with the insider's ownership and transactions, we make sure to also consider what risks are facing a stock before making any investment decision.
