The U.S. stock market was mixed. The Dow Jones Average closed up 299.90 points at 39,134.76, while the Nasdaq closed down 140.65 points at 17,721.59.

The market opened mixed. The rise in interest rates caused by a decrease in new unemployment insurance claims was offset by the Philadelphia Fed Manufacturing Index and housing starts, which indicated an economic slowdown and supported expectations of a Fed rate cut. The Nasdaq hit a record high in the morning but softened in the afternoon and was sold off, centered on semiconductor Nvidia, which had been rising for several days ahead of the triple witching day tomorrow, when stock index futures, stock index options, and individual stock options all expire. Sector-wise, energy and retail rose, while semiconductors and manufacturing equipment, as well as technology, hardware, and equipment, fell notably.

Consulting company Accenture (ACN) rose on better-than-expected quarterly earnings. Biopharmaceutical maker Gilead Sciences (GILD) announced positive clinical trial results showing its HIV treatment drug, Lenacapavir, was effective in preventing infection. Residential construction company KB Homes (KBH) rose on better-than-expected earnings announced after the last trading day. Renewable fuel company Chevron (CVX) was bought up in response to rising crude oil prices. Electronic manufacturing contractor Jabil (JBL) fell significantly. Although its quarterly earnings exceeded market expectations, the warning about weakness in the automotive and transportation markets was taken poorly. Semiconductor Nvidia's decline dragged down fellow industry players Micron Technology (MU) and Qualcomm (QCOM).

Minneapolis Fed President Kashkari, at the annual meeting of the Michigan Bankers Association, expressed the view that it would take 1-2 years for inflation to return to 2%, and emphasized that the path of policy rates would be influenced by economic conditions.
