ルネサスがTransphorm 社の買収を完了

Renesas has completed the acquisition of Transphorm.

Renesas Electronics ·  Jun 19 23:00

Renesas Electronics Corporation (hereafter referred to as Renesas) announces that it has completed the acquisition of Transphorm, Inc. (hereafter Transphorm), a global leader in GaN (gallium nitride) power semiconductor, on June 20, 2024. This enables Renesas to meet the growing demand for wide band gap (WBG) semiconductor products and to start providing power semiconductor products and related solutions using GaN. By using WBG materials such as GaN and SiC (silicon carbide), which have higher power efficiency than conventional Si (silicon), higher switching frequencies, and are smaller, semiconductor products using GaN and SiC are expected to be key technologies for the next-generation power semiconductors, as they are expected to grow rapidly over the next 10 years with the demand for consumer devices such as EVs (electric vehicles), servers for data centers, AI processing, renewable energy devices, industrial power conversion devices, rapid charging adapters, etc. behind the need for such devices.

Chris Alexander, executive officer and general manager of Renesas' Power Solution Business Division, says, "By combining the technologies of both companies to provide turnkey solutions, customers can immediately take advantage of new GaN products. With the addition of GaN to Renesas' portfolio, we have strengthened our commitment to developing products and technology that 'make people's lives easier.' We will continue to provide sustainable power solutions that aim to save energy, reduce costs, and reduce the burden on the environment."

As part of its important long-term growth strategy, Renesas is focusing on its power semiconductor business. Renesas has also launched a power semiconductor 300mm line at its Kofu plant, established an SiC production line at its Takasaki plant, and signed a contract with Wolfspeed for a stable supply of SiC wafers over the next 10 years to strengthen its power semiconductor business. With GaN technology added to Renesas' portfolio, it is now prepared to provide more comprehensive power solutions for a wide range of applications and to strongly support the evolving needs of its customers.

With the completion of the acquisition of Transphorm, Renesas has announced 15 new winning combinations combining its new GaN products with its processors, connectivity, analog, and power products. Among them are products that apply Transphorm's automotive grade GaN technology, such as on-board battery chargers (OBC) for EVs and 3-in-1 units.
