According to the European Automobile Manufacturers Association, the registration of new cars in May decreased to 1.09 million vehicles, a year-on-year decrease of 2.6%. Sales in many major markets declined, mainly due to higher prices of electric cars in Europe.
Last month, sales of plug-in hybrid vehicles in Europe fell by 9.6%, electric vehicle sales decreased by 11%, and the proportion of electric vehicles in total car sales in the region fell by one percentage point to 14%. Among them, Germany, Sweden, and Norway all saw double-digit declines.
Last month, Tesla's (TSLA.US) registration in Europe plummeted by 36%, while Volkswagen and Toyota Motor increased by 1.8% and 8.2%, respectively.
