Participation in the Fry to Fly Project, aimed at achieving a decarbonized society through domestic resource recycling.

Reuse of waste cooking oil from employee canteens for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

June 19, 2024

Fujifilm Business Innovation Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Naoki Hamanaka) will participate in the "Fry to Fly Project," a project aimed at promoting domestic resource circulation and realizing a decarbonized society, as part of its effort to address climate change. The "Fry to Fly Project" targets the collection of waste cooking oil generated by companies and households for the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), which is then used to operate aircraft, contributing to resource circulation and the realization of a decarbonized society.

We have started providing waste cooking oil from the employee canteen at our Yokohama Minato Mirai office to the Fry to Fly Project, and will contribute to the popularization of SAF by sharing information about the project with employees and visitors to the site. We plan to expand the scope of the project to employee canteens at other Fujifilm group locations in the future.

Fujifilm Business Innovation has released full-color digital multifunction devices that actively reuse components after verifying their performance, quality, and safety in order to contribute to the realization of a circular economy. To contribute to the realization of a decarbonized society, we are working to reduce our own CO2 emissions by promoting energy conservation activities at our business sites, utilizing renewable energy, and developing technologies to reduce the power consumption of multifunction devices and printers used in offices. ※1We have decided to participate in the Fry to Fly Project as the project's aims, such as promoting resource circulation and addressing climate change through our business activities, match the direction we are aiming for, and the essence of the project.

Under the Fujifilm Group's CSR plan for 2030, Sustainable Value Plan 2030, we will continue to work on promoting resource circulation and addressing climate change, contributing to the realization of a sustainable society.

About the Fry to Fly Project

The Fry to Fly Project is a project that manufactures sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) domestically from used cooking oil and other waste generated by companies, households, and municipalities, and aims to promote resource circulation and contribute to the decarbonization of society. Used cooking oil is collected to produce SAF, which is used to operate aircraft. The domestic SAF, made from the collected used cooking oil, will be manufactured and supplied by a joint venture called SAFFAIRE SKY ENERGY established by JGC Holdings Corporation unsponsored ADR, Cosmo Oil Co., Ltd., and Rainbow International Inc. from the beginning of the 2025 fiscal year. Currently, 102 companies, municipalities, and organizations are participating in this project (as of April 17, 2024).

About Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)

SAF stands for Sustainable Aviation Fuel, which is an aviation fuel made from biomass (plant-derived) or waste cooking oil and other non-fossil fuels. When comparing the life cycle of SAF made from waste cooking oil to that of conventional fossil fuel-based aviation fuel, from procurement to combustion, SAF made from waste cooking oil is said to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by about 80% compared to conventional aviation fuel. The Japanese government has set a goal of making SAF account for 10% of aircraft fuels by the 2030 fiscal year. This is expected to reduce the environmental impact of the aviation industry and contribute to the realization of a sustainable society.
