MTR Corporation (00066.HK) and China Mobile Hong Kong announced that they are gradually upgrading the 5G mobile network at 24 MTR stations, conducting the installation of 3.3 and 3.5 GHz indoor base stations, allowing passengers to enjoy faster 5G internet experience. Tin Hau station has completed the installation and began operation today. In addition, Wan Chai, Kowloon, and Admiralty stations are expected to complete the upgrade within this year, and the rest of the stations will be completed before 2027.
MTR Corporation cooperates with four local mobile network operators to carry out this 5G wireless network upgrade. The contract was awarded to China Mobile Hong Kong under the new commercial telecommunications system contract issued last year. After completion, the overall performance and service efficiency of the 5G network at relevant stations will be improved, and more passengers can use the wireless network at the same time, providing a better service experience for users of related mobile network operators.
Yang Mei-zhen, Executive Director of Hong Kong Passenger Transport Services of MTR Corporation, said that 5G services have now covered all MTR stations, and this upgrade further improves the spectrum, allowing passengers to use faster, smoother, and more stable 5G internet services inside the stations and trains, and maintain seamless communication with the outside world.
