The Nikkei average fell significantly. The Dow also narrowed its decline but ended mixed. Due to concerns about European political instability, the Tokyo market opened with a selling trend. The Nikkei average dropped below 38,000 yen at one point after opening at 38,440.98 yen, and some said that foreign investors put selling futures after seeing the results of the Bank of Japan's monetary policy meeting. Although it recovered to the 38,000 yen range after a round of selling, it became a strong selling morning session.

On the other hand, the top contributors to the increase were Taiyo Yuden <6976> and Eisai <4523>, which pushed up the Nikkei average by about 8 yen with two stocks.
