The US stock market is mixed. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed down 57.94 points at 38,589.16, while the Nasdaq closed up 21.32 points at 17,688.88.
After initially rising due to expected rate cuts, the market declined due to concerns about slowed consumption caused by Michigan's June consumer confidence index falling more than expected. The Nasdaq rose for the fifth consecutive day and reached a new high due to falling interest rates and Adobe's good performance. Although the Dow Jones Industrial Average reduced its decline, it still closed mixed. By sector, semiconductors and manufacturing equipment and software and services rose, while automobiles and auto parts declined.
Software maker Adobe (ADBE) saw an increase in sales because of its incorporation of artificial intelligence (AI) into its products, leading to an upward revision of its annual outlook and rising stock prices. Microstrategy (MSTR), which focuses on Bitcoin, saw its stock prices rise after analysts raised their investment estimates. Cruise ship operators Carnival (CCL) and Norwegian Cruise Line (NCLH) both declined after analysts warned of potential price declines due to slowed demand. Luxury furniture seller RH (RH) also declined after its first-quarter earnings showed wider-than-expected losses. Mobile device maker Apple (AAPL) faced increased caution after reports that the European Commission might determine that the company violated digital market laws.
In an interview, Cleveland Federal Reserve President Mester expressed concerns about upward risks despite recent favorable inflation indicators. Mester has voting rights on the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) this year.
