According to reports, some parts of recently produced Boeing (BA.US) and Airbus jet engines were made using fake titanium. The documents proving these materials are counterfeit. Spirit Aerosystems (SPR.US), which provides fuselage to Boeing and wings to Airbus, as well as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) of the United States, are investigating the issue.
Before the investigation was launched, a component supplier discovered small holes caused by corrosion on the materials.
The FAA stated that it is investigating the scope of the problem and trying to determine the short-term and long-term safety impact on the planes that use these parts.
It is currently unclear how many planes' components are made with problematic materials.
Boeing has been plagued with troubles in recent times. According to reports, Boeing is investigating a new quality issue with the 787 Dreamliner, after discovering that hundreds of fasteners were installed incorrectly on some undelivered planes. It is worth mentioning that since the emergency landing of an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 MAX plane due to an exploding fuselage panel on January 5, Boeing has been under strict scrutiny from regulatory agencies and customers.
As of press time, Boeing fell more than 1% in pre-market trading, and Spirit Aerosystems fell nearly 2%.
