Biomea Fusion Stock Down 48% But Insiders Still In US$17k Profit

Simply Wall St ·  Jun 14 20:44

Biomea Fusion, Inc. (NASDAQ:BMEA) insiders who acquired shares over the previous 12 months, can probably afford to ignore the recent 48% decline in the stock price. After taking the recent loss into consideration, the US$55.4k worth of stock they bought is now worth US$72.7k, indicating that their investment yielded a positive return.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Biomea Fusion

Notably, that recent purchase by Franco Valle is the biggest insider purchase of Biomea Fusion shares that we've seen in the last year. Even though the purchase was made at a significantly lower price than the recent price (US$5.81), we still think insider buying is a positive. Because the shares were purchased at a lower price, this particular buy doesn't tell us much about how insiders feel about the current share price.

Does Biomea Fusion Boast High Insider Ownership?

Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. Biomea Fusion insiders own about US$27m worth of shares. That equates to 13% of the company. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.

So What Does This Data Suggest About Biomea Fusion Insiders?

It is good to see the recent insider purchase. We also take confidence from the longer term picture of insider transactions. But we don't feel the same about the fact the company is making losses. Given that insiders also own a fair bit of Biomea Fusion we think they are probably pretty confident of a bright future. While it's good to be aware of what's going on with the insider's ownership and transactions, we make sure to also consider what risks are facing a stock before making any investment decision.
