According to research institution Jato Dynamics on June 14th, leading Chinese brand BYD Company Limited sold 13.4 million new autos last year, surpassing US brands such as Ford and Chevrolet, which sold 11.9 million vehicles. Japanese brands performed best overall, occupying seven seats in the top ten best-selling vehicles, with a total of approximately 23.6 million sales. Chinese auto manufacturers have seen a surge in market share in the Middle East, Eurasia, and Africa, while SAIC and Geely have made progress in more mature markets such as Europe and Australia. Jato analyst Felipe Munoz said that the neglect of traditional auto manufacturers has led to high car prices, inadvertently driving consumers to turn to more affordable Chinese alternative products. The EU's move this week to impose tariffs on imported electric autos from China may persuade BYD and its peers to further expand in emerging markets.
