Kornit Digital (NASDAQ:KRNT) Adds US$68m to Market Cap in the Past 7 Days, Though Investors From Three Years Ago Are Still Down 87%

Simply Wall St ·  Jun 12 21:29

This week we saw the Kornit Digital Ltd. (NASDAQ:KRNT) share price climb by 10%. But only the myopic could ignore the astounding decline over three years. To wit, the share price sky-dived 87% in that time. So it sure is nice to see a bit of an improvement. Of course the real question is whether the business can sustain a turnaround. While a drop like that is definitely a body blow, money isn't as important as health and happiness.

The recent uptick of 10% could be a positive sign of things to come, so let's take a look at historical fundamentals.

Kornit Digital isn't currently profitable, so most analysts would look to revenue growth to get an idea of how fast the underlying business is growing. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually desire strong revenue growth. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one would hope for good top-line growth to make up for the lack of earnings.

In the last three years Kornit Digital saw its revenue shrink by 10% per year. That is not a good result. Having said that the 23% annualized share price decline highlights the risk of investing in unprofitable companies. This business clearly needs to grow revenues if it is to perform as investors hope. There's no more than a snowball's chance in hell that share price will head back to its old highs, in the short term.

We're pleased to report that the CEO is remunerated more modestly than most CEOs at similarly capitalized companies. It's always worth keeping an eye on CEO pay, but a more important question is whether the company will grow earnings throughout the years. A Different Perspective

Investors in Kornit Digital had a tough year, with a total loss of 49%, against a market gain of about 23%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 8% per year over five years. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Consider risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 1 warning sign for Kornit Digital you should know about.
